48 Hours of Estimating Animal Abundance

Estimating animal abundance is central to ecology, conservation, and wildlife management — yet it remains one of the field’s most persistent methodological challenges. Detectability, sampling design, imperfect observations, and spatial variability all shape how population estimates are produced and interpreted across ecological systems.

 

The “48 Hours of Estimating Animal Abundance” workshop brings together students, researchers, and professionals for two days of talks, short courses, and discussions focused on the methods behind wildlife population abundance estimation. Alongside the scientific programme, one of the event’s main highlights will be the hands-on clinic, where participants will have the opportunity to discuss analytical challenges, explore methodological approaches, and, time permitting, work directly on their own data with experienced researchers working at the forefront of quantitative ecology and abundance estimation.

 

Organized by CEAUL (Centro de Estatística e Aplicações, Universidade de Lisboa) and hosted at Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa on 11–12 June, the event is designed for anyone interested in quantitative ecology, conservation science, field methods, or ecological data analysis — from early-career students to established researchers looking to exchange ideas and strengthen collaborations.
