Abstract: I will begin by describing how a Masters in Medical Statistics in the UK opens up a range of different jobs. The seminar will focus on public health studies, and in particular on “lifestyle behaviours”, such as diet, physical activity and smoking.  These have an important role in trying to prevent or delay disease. I will describe some applied (epidemiological) work and some interesting methods and methodological problems (statistical) that have arisen from this. In particular, I will show the importance of “clustering” in the sampling for surveys and in the randomisation of clusters in trials.
